Williams Tops Women's Basketball, 66-47, In Non-Conference Tilt

Kelly Murphy Box Score

Williamstown, Mass. - November 24, 2009 - Meghan Biondolillo tallied a team-best 13 points to go along with six rebounds but the Springfield College women's basketball team fell on the road at Williams, 66-47, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

After winning its season opener at Worcester State, Springfield has now dropped its last three games to drop to 1-3 on the 2009 season.

Chessie Jackson led all scorers with 18 points to lead Williams to victory, their second in a row, as they improve to 2-1 this season.

Williams built a 29-23 lead by the half thanks in part to a 26-17 edge on the glass and seven points off the bench from first-year Claire Baecher. But Springfield came out of the locker room playing tenacious defense and tied the game at 29 on a lay-up by Kelly Slattery, a couple off foul shots by Kelly Murphy and an offensive putback by Murphy off a Slattery miss that tied the score with 17:04 remaining.

The decisive stretch in the game came after Murphy's layup as the Ephs rattled off a 19-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes to take a commanding 48-31 lead with 9:28 on the clock.

The Williams lead never dipped below nine from that point forward.

Jackson scored 12 of her 18 points over the final 20 minutes on 5 of 9 shooting from the floor. She also had eight rebounds. The Ephs effort on the glass was noticeable, as they finished plus-21 (54-33). Sophomore Lisa Jaris registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Shea finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

Other than Biondolillo, who scored 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including three buckets from downtown, Murphy was the only other member of the Pride to reach double figures as she netted 11 points on the night. Briana Freymuth tallied eight points as she connected on a pair of trifectas and Amelia Sapowsky chipped in with seven rebounds and three assists.

Springfield will open up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday, December 2nd when it hosts Mount Holyoke at 7:00 pm.
