Bristol, R.I. -- January 8, 2011 -- The Springfield College wrestling team, ranked #1 in New England Division III, won the Roger Williams Invitational Saturday, defeating eight other teams along the way. In addition, four SC wrestlers, including Ryan McGilvray at 149 pounds, John Archambeau (165), Brandon Sundwall (174), and Nicholas Camera (184), captured individual titles.
As a team, Springfield scored 139.5 points for head coach Daryl Arroyo to win the title by a good margin. Finishing second was Williams College with 110 points. In third was Plymouth State with 101, followed by host Roger Williams with 76, Elizabethtown (51.5), Southern Maine (46.5), Norwich (38), STCC (11.5), and AIC (10.5).
The Pride had 13 wrestlers place in the top four in the 10 different weight categories.
Starting with the 125-pound weight class, SC's freshman Tom Casper (Bergenfield, N.J.) placed third. At 141, two from SC placed in the top three -- senior Blaze Chatham (Walkill, N.Y.) in second, and freshman Corey Kozimor (Vienna, N.J.) in third.
In the 149-pound class, McGilvray, a junior from Manalapan, N.J., finished first. At 157, senior Steve Flathers (Stratford, Conn.) placed second, and sophomore Derrick Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) took third.
Archambeau, a senior from Ludlow, Mass., was the second individual SC champion at 165, while Sundwall, a senior from Guilford, Conn., was the third at 174. Sundwall defeated sophomore teammate Michael Fish (Middletown, N.J.), who finished second at 174.
Camera, a sophomore from North Massapequa, N.Y., won a third straight individual title for SC in the competition at 184. Teammate Jeff Brodeur, a junior from Lanesboro, Mass., took fourth in the same weight class.
Also finishing fourth were senior Anthony Dalesandro (Netcong, N.J.) at 197 and senior Ron Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) at heavyweight.
Next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 14-15), SC will compete at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming.
