Springfield, Mass. – March 15, 2014 - Behind a pair of first-place finishes from senior James Hennin (Auckland, New Zealand), the Springfield College men’s gymnastics team grinded out a 411.350-406.150 win against Navy on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena.
With the victory, the Pride improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Midshipmen fall to 2-3 overall.
Hennin took first place on the parallel bars, with a score of 14.150 and paired it with a first place finish on the high bar with a score of 14.100 in his last home meet with the Pride.
Also on the parallel bars, juniors Ian Stratton (Elizabeth City, N.C.) and Sam Docherty (Upton, Mass.) both tied for second place behind Hennin, with matching scores of 14.050.
Senior Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.) registered another impressive performance, as he took first on the still rings with a score of 15.200. Classmate Pat Hanley (Abington, Mass.) came in second with a score of 14.450.
Sophomore Jon Zirna (Buffalo, N.Y.) put in another impressive day, taking first place in the pommel horse with a 14.650, while teammates Pat Ryther (Boston, Mass.) finished second with a score of 14.500 and Tucker McClure (San Jose, Calif.) took third with a 13.950.
McClure was the top finisher for Springfield on the floor exercise, posting a 13.550, good for fourth overall, while Zirna finished fifth with a 13.500. Zirna also finished second in the all-around competition to Jonny Tang (Malvern, Pa.) who posted a 14.400 to Zirna’s 13.500.
The Pride will be back in action on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22 when they will travel to Annapolis, Md. for the USGA Championships.
