Adam DeFelice Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - April 8, 2010 - The Babson College baseball team scored four runs in top of the first and never looked back as it cruised to a 14-4 victory over Springfield College on Thursday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.

The Pride drop to 9-13, 2-5 in league play, while the Beavers improve to 17-5, 7-2.

The Beavers jumped all over the Pride to start the game as they plated four runs in the opening inning. Babson got a trio of doubles from Billy Miller, Dave Ahern, and Sean Cleary as it totaled five hits in the inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Ahern’s double highlighted the inning as he ripped a shot off the left field fence that just missed leaving the yard.

Springfield scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second as Brian Harris led off the inning with a deep shot to left center for a solo homer. Cleary tacked on a run for the Beavers in the third as he hammered a towering shot of his own to left center to bring the visitors lead back to four at 5-1.

The visitors added three more run in the fourth to balloon its lead to 8-1. Billy Besinger roped a standup double to left center that scored two in the inning for the Beavers.

Mike Corletta started the sixth off in impressive fashion as he crushed a solo shot over the left field fence onto Wilbraham Avenue to make it an 8-2 ball game. Harris added a double later in the inning but was stranded as Springfield could only plate one in the frame.

Babson responded with two runs in the eighth after Clearly’s single to center field scored both Ahern and Travis Jonasson. Both reached based on back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position after a passed ball.

A John Schmaltz RBI single up the middle scored Harris in the bottom of the eighth for the Pride’s third run of the game. In the ninth, after a Springfield error with two outs kept the inning alive, the Beavers laced back-to-back doubles by Cleary and Besigner en route to four innings in the frame.

Springfield closed out the scoring in the bottom of the ninth on a sac fly to deep center by Kyle DiFranco, which scored Karl Quist easily from third.

Starter Steve Forbes lasted 4.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs, as he shouldered the loss. Babson’s starter, Kyle Lyon, kept the Pride at bay as he tossed eight innings of seven-hit ball, allowing just three earned runs while striking out six.

Cleary finished the game going 5-for-6 at the dish with five RBI, while Besinger also registered five RBI on a 4-for-5 performance. Harris and Corletta each had two hits for Springfield in the loss.

The Pride will continue league action on Saturday as it travels to take on Clark for a double header beginning at 11:00 am.
