SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 12, 2006), - Freshman Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) scored two goals and sophomore Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Maine) added two more, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team over the 19th-ranked Western New England College Golden Bears, as SC fell 10-5 Wednesday evening in Pilgrim League play at a packed Benedum Field.
The game featured a battle of two unbeaten teams in league play. The Pride came into the game 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the PLL. WNEC entered showcasing a record of 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the PLL.
Springfield started the game off strong, taking a 3-1 advantage from the gate. WNEC quickly gained momentum back, getting a goal from sophomore Bryan Cofrin (Londonderry, N.H.) and Zack Sondrini (Pittsfield, Mass.) to tie the game up 3-3 going into the second period.
WNEC used two second period goals from junior Adam Cherry (Westfield, Mass) and sophomore Mike Kelly (Cheshire, Conn.) to take a 5-3 lead. A goal by SC senior All-American Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, Rhode Island) late in the period left the score at 5-4 going into the half.
With the score close, the Golden Bears exploded in the third period, scoring two more goals to give them a 7-4 lead. WNEC played a physical style of defense holding the Pride to only a late goal by Montgomery in that period.
The hard-hitting third stanza took a lot out of the Pride. The Golden Bears scored three unanswered fourth period goals, helping them run away with the 10-5 win.
The loss drops the Pride to 5-4 overall on the season and 2-1 in the league, while the win boosts WNEC’s record to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
