Baseball Picks Up 5-2 Conference Win At Coast Guard

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. - April 8, 2008 - Michael Cole scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, one earned, over eight innings and Springfield scored four unearned runs to beat Coast Guard 5-2 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game earlier today.

Coast Guard’s Will Becker (1-5) was the tough-luck loser as he went the distance and allowed 10 hits, but just one earned run, while walking two and striking out a season-high seven.

Springfield scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Casey Federico and increased its lead to 2-0 on an RBI single by Rex Cone in the third.

Kevin Keefe, who led off the bottom of the third, scored on a throwing error as Coast Guard cut the deficit to 2-1.

Federico added another RBI single in the fifth as the Pride (9-13, 3-3) took a 3-1 lead.

Springfield scored two more unearned runs in the fifth as Cone scored on an error, which would have ended the inning and then Tim Romeo followed with an RBI-single as the Pride took a 5-1 lead.

Coast Guard (6-14, 1-7) scored its final run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Adam Reckley, scoring Christian George who led off with a single.

Mario Piscitelli picked up his second save of the season for the Pride as he allowed two singles and struck out three in the ninth.

Cone was 3 for 4 while Federico and Drew Michael each had two hits. Michael also scored two runs.

Ken Franklin was 3 for 5, Brian Yurovich had two hits including a double, the only extra base hit in the game, while Ryan Milligan had two hits, walked twice and stole two bases for the Bears.

Springfield returns to action on Wednesday when it travels back to the Nutmeg State to take on Eastern Connecticut State. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm.
