SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – March 19, 2008 -Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) dished out three assists to go along with a goal as the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-6 decision to Middlebury on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Pride drop to 2-4 while the 12th-ranked Panthers move to 3-0.
Beebe found the back of the cage just over two minutes into the third quarter after he wrapped around the cage and found the back the net while falling to the ground, breaking a five-all tie. That would be the last time Springfield would light up the scoreboard as the Panthers held Springfield scoreless for the final 27:36. In that span, Middlebury netted seven unanswered goals en route to the 12-6 victory.
Skyler Hopkins netted a pair of goals to go along with an assist in the run to lead the Panthers to the victory.
Middlebury wasted no time scoring the game’s first goal as Frank Granara found the back of the cage just 13 seconds into the contest. A goal from Brett Witmer off a feed from Pete Smith gave the Panthers a two-goal advtange with just under nine minutes left in the first period.
On the ensuing possession, Kyle Louer (Islip, N.Y.), from behind the cage, feed a charging longstick midfielder Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) in the middle of the field. Sharpe fired the ball past the Middlebury to give the Pride it’s first goal of the game. Five minutes later, Chris Jez (Somers, Conn.) then knotted the game at two off Beebe’s first assist of the game. Middlebury’s Mike Stone put the visitors up 3-2 after the first period of the play after he scored his first goal of the afternoon with a minute and a half remaining.
Beebe connected with Joe Heney (Plainview, N.Y.), who netted an acrobatic tally to tie the game at three 5:13 into the second period. The Pride took it’s first lead of the game at the 7:59 mark when Jez netted his second of the game, this time an unassisted mark. The Panthers tied the game at four when Dave Campbell’s shot deflected off a Springfield defender’s stick and found the back of the cage 38 seconds later. With 4:50 on the clock, Beebe found a wide-open Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Maine), who made no mistake as he slipped a shot into the cage from six yards out, giving SC a 5-4 advantage. Matt Ferrer’s goal tied the game at five heading into halftime after he finished a feed from Stone with 1:23 on the clock.
Tom Albano (Ridgewood, N.J.) made a game-high 15 saves in goal for Springfield while Jason Farrell (Mahopac, N.Y.) caused four turnovers to go along with five groundballs.
Stone led the way with two goals and three assists for a game-high five points. Peter Britt made nine saves in the cage while Campbell went 12-of-22 from the “X”, scooping up a game-high 10 groundballs.
The Pride return to action on the March 29th when it opens up Pilgrim Lacrosse League play. The Pride will host Wheaton at 12:00 pm.
