Football's Baker Honored By FFC and ECAC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 15, 2003 -- Springfield College senior linebacker Jesse Baker was selected as the Freedom Football Conference (FFC) Defensive Player of the Week, announced today.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, Baker was chosen as the ECAC Division III Northeast Defensive Player of the Week.

Baker, a team captain who hails from Rutland, Vt., tied a school record with three interceptions in the Pride’s 22-14 victory at Montclair State on Sat., Sept. 13. He became the sixth player in SC history to record three interceptions in a game. Baker made his final pick on the Pride’s goal line with 2:11 to play and the Red Hawks attempting to tie the score. He also recorded five tackles and recovered a fumble.

An all-FFC selection in 2001, Baker missed all but two games of the ’02 campaign with an injury. With his three interceptions, Baker moves in ninth place on SC’s all-time list with nine. He is also eighth in SC history with 240 tackles.

Baker and the Pride (2-0 overall) host 25th-ranked Kings Point (N.Y.) in the FFC opener for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m.
