No. 17 Field Hockey Takes Down No. 8 Cortland, 4-3

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 30, 2007) – The No. 17 Springfield College field hockey team raced out to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-3 victory over the eighth-ranked Cortland Red Dragons on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action Stagg Field.

The victory moves the Pride to 9-2 on the season while Cortland's nine-game winning streak was snapped, making the Red Dragons 9-2 as well.

With the win, the Pride defeated two teams in the top 15 in the country this week. Springfield previously defeated No. 14 Williams on Wednesday evening.

Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) was outstanding for the Pride once again as she tallied a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner, and added an assist. Kelleher opened up the scoring at the 19:17 mark of the first half when she finished a feed from Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine). Kelleher found Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) for Springfield's second goal of the game with 10:37 left in the opening stanza.

Veazie gave the home team a 3-0 advantage when she wasted no time finding the back of the cage 4:08 into the second half. Kelleher netted the eventual game-winning goal after a mad scramble in front of the cage with 19:04 left in the game.

The Red Dragons mounted a furious rally, tallying three goals in a 11:11 span to cut the Pride's lead to just one. Brenda Semit opened the scoring for Cortland with 16:22 before teammate Holly Duesler scored just 1:19 later. The Red Dragons final goal would come from Kayla Chamber with 5:09 remaining. The Red Dragons were awarded a pair of penalty corners with no time left on the clock but were unable to complete the four-goal comeback.

Emma Kaplan (Ridgfield, Conn.) made 14 saves in goal for the Pride while Stacy Billings notched nine stops.

Springfield heads back into action on Tuesday evening with a conference matchup against Smith at 7:00 p.m.
