Football Plays Host To Fitchburg State In ECAC Championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 15, 2004 – Springfield College will take on Fitchburg State in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III North Atlantic Championship this Sat., Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. on Benedum Field, announced today.

This is the Pride's third-consecutive post-season berth, a first in the program's 111-year history. SC competed in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2002 and '03. The Pride last played in an ECAC Championship in 1995, a 49-26 win over Cortland (N.Y.).

Saturday's game is the first meeting ever between the schools.

“This is great for New England college football,” said SC head coach Mike DeLong. “We have 23 seniors that are looking forward to another chance to play, and Fitchburg has had a very good season.”

The Pride (7-2, 4-2 Empire 8) is 15-1 on Benedum Field since the ‘02 season, including a 5-0 mark this season. In five wins in ‘04, SC averages 42.4 points and 415.6 yards rushing.

This is Fitchburg State's first post-season appearance. The Falcons (8-3 overall) were runner-up in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) after dropping a 17-7 decision to Curry in the conference championship game on Sat., Nov. 13. Prior to Saturday's loss to Curry, they had won eight games in row.

The only common opponent is Western Connecticut. The Pride defeated Western Conn., 56-27, on Oct. 9 in Danbury, Conn., while the Falcons lost 31-17 on the road to the Colonials on Sept. 3
