SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 17, 2007 – Springfield College senior attack Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) scored a team-high three goals and freshman goalkeeper Lauren McAulay (Yorktown, N.Y.) made 12 saves as the Pride defeated #10-ranked Williams College, 11-9, in non-conference play this evening at Benedum Field.
With the win, SC improves to 8-6 overall on the season and snaps its two-game losing streak. The Ephs of Williams College fall to 5-4 overall on the year. The Pride’s victory this evening avenges a 20-16 loss SC was handed back on April 5th, 2006, in Williamstown, Mass.
SC senior quad-captain Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Alexandra Bazzano (Newington, Conn.) chipped in with two goals apiece for the Pride, as Bazzano came up with two draw controls and Thomas grabbed four ground balls. Other members of SC to score on the night included; senior quad-captain Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.); freshman attack Jennifer Zubkus (Dover, N.H.); junior defender Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.); and junior midfielder Lindsay Bugbee (Granby, Conn.).
Williams College senior midfielder Kaylan Tildsley led all players in the contest with four goals and two assists for six total points of offense. Sophomore midfielder Britt Spackman contributed with two goals and two assists, and senior attack Elizabeth Pierce netted two scores of her own.
The Ephs jumped out early on the Pride, scoring the game’s first three goals all within the first four minutes of play. With Williams leading 4-1, however, SC mounted a 6-0 run throughout the middle stages of the first half to take command, 7-4. From that point on the teams would trade goals, and with the scoreboard reading 11-9 in favor of the Pride, SC used a variety of crisp passes within the final five minutes of regulation to keep the Ephs from scoring again. The Pride next returns to conference play when it entertains Babson College on Saturday afternoon, April 21st, in a 2:30 p.m. start.
