SCHENECTADY, N.Y., September 10, 2005 - Springfield College sophomore halfback Derron Walker (White Plains, N.Y.) rushed for 139 yards on 14 carries and junior linebacker Andrew Madigan (New Britain, Conn.) posted 13 tackles (12 solo), but Union College scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to spoil the Pride's season-opener, 35-7, on Saturday night (Sept. 10) at Frank Bailey Field.
In the first quarter, Union (1-0) capped a nine-play, 81-yard drive to open the scoring as junior quarterback Anthony Marotti tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Steve Angiletta with 8:40 left. In the second quarter, the Dutchmen tacked on another touchdown to make it 14-0 after the Pride fumbled at its own six-yard line. The score remained the same heading into the half.
SC (0-1) cut the lead in half in the third quarter, however, with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that took 5:08 off the clock. Junior quarterback Joe Deptula (Oxford, Conn.) scored on an eight-yard dash, putting the Pride right back in the contest with just 1:16 left in the stanza.
In the fourth, the Dutchmen took control of the game with a quick touchdown drive just 1:19 into the quarter. Marotti hooked up with Angiletta once again, this time for a 10-yard touchdown score. SC would then turn the ball over on its next two possessions (two interceptions) as Union clinched the opener for both squads. The Pride totaled 272 yards of rushing offense in its opener, but it was the Dutchmen passing game that threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns. Senior defensive back Mitch Dupuis (Merrimack, N.H.) added eight solo tackles for SC and senior linebacker Mark Bartinelli (Montrose, N.Y.) picked up a sack.
The Pride opens up its home season next week as Wisconson-Stout comes to Springfield, Mass., for a non-conference match-up on Saturday afternoon, September 17, in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
