Strong Safety Kevin Fessette Early Team Leader in Tackling

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., – September 21, 2006 – The Springfield College football team, recently ranked #1 in New England Division III, has received many great individual performances in the past two weeks on its way to a 2-0 record. But while the offense has received most of the plaudits, there are several defenders who have performed above and beyond for the Pride.

One of the top defenders is senior captain Kevin Fessette, a strong safety from Plattsburgh, N.Y.

In the past two weeks, Springfield College defeated always-powerful and then 11th-ranked Union College of Schenectady, N.Y., 38-30, and then followed that up with a victory over a strong Montclair State University team, 27-15. Both games were played at SC’s Benedum Field

In the win over Union, Fessette led his squad with nine tackles, including six solo. He had a half-tackle for loss of three yards, plus one interception and two pass break-ups. In this contest, Springfield was holding its 38-30 lead when Union was knocking on SC’s door with less than four minutes remaining. On a second-and-goal from the three-yard line, running back Tom Arcidiacono, who had earlier in the game become Union’s all-time leading rusher, was given the ball for what looked like a shot at the end zone. But the hole closed quickly, forcing Arcidiacono to reverse his field, and ultimately lose six yards. Making that primary tackle was Fessette (along with fellow senior captain and ILB Andrew Madigan). On the fourth down play, a hurried shovel pass fell harmlessly incomplete, Fessette again one of those applying the pressure. SC then ran out the clock

In the win over Montclair State, Fessette also had another great day. He once again had 9 tackles, including 3 solos. In addition, he had 1 pass deflection and 1 interception on the game’s final play, returning it 53 yards and literally running out the clock. Kevin’s two-game total of 18 tackles leads his squad. He is currently ranked tied for 4th in the Empire 8 conference with his 9.0 tackles per game.

“Kevin has certainly been one of our most consistent performers,” said Springfield Head Coach Mike DeLong, the winningest active head coach in New England Division III with 138 career victories in this, his 25th year (23rd at Springfield). “It’s amazing how much strength he packs into his 5-foot, 8-inch, 183-pound frame. He’s been an impressive young man, and an inspirational leader for us. That’s why he is one of our captains."

This is the third straight year that Fessette has started at strong safety for SC. In 2004 as a sophomore, Kevin tied for 5th in total tackles with 37. He recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown against Hartwick during that campaign. In 2005 as a junior, Kevin was second on his team in solo tackles (37), assisted tackles (26), total tackles (63), and interceptions (3). He also broke up a team-best 5 passes on the season. He will certainly remember his 12-tackle performance against Ithaca.

At Beekmantown HS, Fessette earned honors while playing both football and hockey for the Eagles before graduating in 2002. Kevin then played a year at Bridgton Academy before coming to Springfield College. He is the son of Greg and Ilene Fessette of 37 Lake Shore Road in Plattsburgh. The Fessettes religiously follow their son’s play at all SC football games.

Kevin is now majoring in physical education, and minoring in health, at Springfield College.

This week, Springfield opens its Empire 8 schedule by hosting Alfred at 12 noon at Benedum Field. Last year, SC lost to the Saxons, 23-22, in overtime on a missed extra point.
