Women's Lacrosse Advances To NEWMAC Championship
, April 27, 2003-- Springfield College advanced to the championship round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament with a thrilling 10-9 semifinal round victory over Wellesley on Sunday at Wheaton College.
With the win, the second-seeded Pride, the defending conference champions, will face top-seed Wheaton tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year's title game. The winner earns a berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Wellesley senior captain Grace Tsan scored the game's initial goal on an assist from teammate Dawn Kim :52 into play. Less than three minutes later, SC freshman attack Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.)
knotted the contest at one, but Wellesley reclaimed the lead with scores at 5:06 and 12:18 to take a 3-1 advantage. The Pride fought back. scoring four times to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Wellesley junior attack Lisa Andruszkiewicz came out of the intermission by recording an unassisted goal fifteen seconds into the half, followed by another score on an assist from Tsan at 10:46. Springfield would not relinquish the lead its attained in the first half, however, as Looney and classmate Lindsay Reiniger (Rochester, N.Y.)
teamed up for the Pride's final three scores with 6:45 remaining in the game. Wellesley sophomore attack Lydia McGuigan began a short-lived rally by notching a score on an assist from Andruszkiewicz with 1:29 remaining, but Springfield held on to preserve the final 10-9 margin.
Springfield senior goalkeeper Emily Boosahda (Bass River, Mass.)
stopped ten shots, as the Pride kept the pressure on the other side of the field, attacking Wellesley goalkeeper Alissa Gordon (with 32 shots. Gordon finished with 18 saves.
