Softball Sweeps on Final Day in Florida; Ends Trip 5-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- March 21, 2008 -- The Springfield College softball team finished its Florida swing and the Rebel Games in style by sweeping two games on Friday, first defeating William Paterson, 6-1, and then defeating St. Benedict, 6-2.

With those two victories, Springfield is now 5-5 on the season, and will next play up north on Wednesday, March 26 when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 pm. The Pride will have momentum, ending its trip to Kissimee with three straight wins.

In game #1, Springfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. SC added one in the third. William Paterson of Wayne, N.J. scored its lone run in the fourth before the Pride sealed it with three in the seventh. Springfield had 14 hits. Junior DP Danielle Spiro (So. Windsor, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI's for SC. Junior OF Angela Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) also went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior first baseman Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Sophomore shortstop Jaimie Moran (Manchester, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI's. Junior lefthander Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) picked up her third victory of the trip by pitching a complete game. She gave up eight hits and one earned run, while striking out seven and walking none.

In game #2 versus St. Benedict of St. Joseph, Minn., it was scoreless through three innings. Springfield then scored four runs in the fourth. St. Benedict closed it to three runs in the top of the fifth, but the Pride made it 6-1 at the end of six with two more. St. Benedict added one final run in the top of the seventh. Freshman righthander Katie Anderson (Andover, Mass.) picked her first collegiate victory, giving up two earned runs and six hits, while striking out three and walking three. Sophomore OF Bryn Worrilow (No. Babylon, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Senior 3B Lauren D'Arrigo (Lexington, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Spiro also went 2-for-3. Senior 2B Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI's. Atkins went 1-for-4 with two RBI's. And freshman pinch-hitter Amanda Novak (Cos Cob, Conn.) went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Springfield finished with 11 hits, giving it 25 for the day.
