Softball Picks Up Another Pair Of Wins After Sweeping MCLA

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – April 8, 2008 – Samantha Rhodes pitched a one-hitter, the second of her career, in game #1, and then freshman Katie Anderson pitched a complete game in game #2 to lead the Springfield College softball team to 13-0 and 3-1 victories over MCLA this afternoon at Potter Field.

With the wins, Springfield upped its overall record to 13-11, while MCLA fell to 3-15. After losing four straight, Springfield has now won four straight.

Rhodes, a junior lefthander from Mendon, Mass., was in total control in the first game. She allowed just one bunt single in the fourth inning, striking out four and walking none. As was the case yesterday when she pitched her first career no-hitter against Smith, she faced just one batter over the minimum. Rhodes had pitched a one-hitter as a freshman two years ago in a 1-0 win against Eastern Connecticut State.

The first game was mercied after 4 and innings. The Pride scored seven runs in the second inning, and added six more in the fourth. In the second inning, SC sent 10 players to the plate. The big hit in the inning was a grand slam home run to right center by sophomore right fielder Bryn Worrilow (No. Babylon, N.Y.). That made the score 7-0 at the time.

In the six-run fourth, the big hit was a three-run home run by sophomore catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.). Earlier in the inning, senior 2B Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) knocked in two with a double. Fumicello had a great day, going 3-for-5, with two runs scored, three RBI’s, and four stolen bases. Worrilow had five runs batted in in game #1 alone. Wlosek also had three RBI’s in game #1.

For MCLA, sophomore right hander Jen McMurray (Margaretville, N.Y.) was the loser, falling to 1-3. She gave up 13 runs, 11 earned, on only seven hits. She also walked six, while striking out four.

In game #2, Springfield scored right out of the gate in the first inning when Fumicello led off with a triple, and then came home immediately on a wild pitch.

In the third inning for the Pride, after two were out, junior CF Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) doubled, followed by an RBI-double by Worrilow. Wlosek then followed with an RBI-single, giving Springfield a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, MCLA struck for its only run of the day, although it did threaten in several of the later innings. Starting pitcher Kate Malloy (Clarksburg, Mass.) drove in the run with a double.

Malloy went the distance for the Trailblazers, allowing three runs, all earned, and 10 hits in six innings. She walked three and struck out two. She is now 0-7.

For Springfield, the winning pitcher was Anderson, a righthander from Andover, Mass., who is now 3-4 after picking up her second win in two days. Anderson gave up the one run, earned, and nine hits. She fanned eight and walked two.

Fumicello and freshman 1B Jessica Hillman (Seymour, Conn.) had two hits apiece in game #2 for the Pride. For MCLA, junior CF Taylor Kenyon (No. Bennington, Vt.) and freshman 3B Katie Ouellette (Norwood, Mass.) each had two hits.

Springfield next plays a doubleheader Wednesday (Apr. 9) at Bridgewater State at 3:30 pm.
