Wheaton Edges Women's Lacrosse, 11-7, For NEWMAC Crown
, April 25, 2004 – Wheaton College captured its second-straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship with an 11-7 victory over Springfield College at Keefe Field.
This was the third consecutive season the Pride (11-5) and the Lyons (14-2) met in the title game. The Lyons broke open a two-goal game at the half by scoring the first three goals of the second stanza.
The teams split the first six goals midway through the first half. Senior Libby Beinert (Williston, Vt.)
, junior Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.)
and sophomore Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.)
all scored for the Pride.
SC took its first lead of the game with 12 minutes to play, when freshman Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.)
gave the Pride a 4-3 edge. In the final 10 minutes of the half, Wheaton bounced back with three unanswered goals, including one from Vanessa Pisano, senior Lauren Maynes and sophomore Julia Coit, to take a 6-4 lead into the half.
In the second half, Wheaton piled on three more goals push its advantage to 9-4 with 15:14 remaining. Carmody's goal one minute later helped SC trim its deficit to four, but the Lyons' Coit and Pisano scored goals over a 33-second span for an 11-5 lead with just over 11 minutes to play. Junior Spring Silverman (Huntington Valley, Pa.)
tallied the game's final two goals.
SC out-shot the Lyons, 37-26, which included 13 free-position shots. Wheaton’s A.J. Vasiliou was stellar in net finishing with 23 saves, including 14 in the second half. Pride sophomore goalie Shannah Paddock (Dayton, Ohio)
had nine saves in the loss.
