Eastern Connecticut Downs Women's Lacrosse, 13-8, In NCAA Div. III Tournament First Round

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 11, 2005 – Eastern Connecticut State University senior forward Mo Deegan (Westport, Conn.) totaled three goals and seven assists to lead the Warriors to a 13-8 victory over host Springfield College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Tournament this evening on Benedum Field. Eastern Connecticut (13-6), which is making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, advances to play at No. 1 Salisbury University in second-round action on Saturday (May 14) in Maryland.

Springfield College senior forward Erin Looney (West Springfield, Mass.) tallied three goals and an assist while senior midfielder Spring Silverman (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) added three goals for the Pride (12-6), which was making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons.

Eastern Connecticut jumped out to a 5-1 lead with 19:13 remaining in the first half as Deegan assisted all five Warrior goals. Looney’s second goal of the game made the score, 5-2, with 16:55 on the clock, before a 3-1 ECSU run, including two goals and an assist by Deegan, gave the Warriors a 8-3 lead at halftime.

SC struck first in the second half on a Silverman’s first goal of the game with 27:04 on the clock, before two more ECSU goals by junior midfielder Kara Mastoianni (Newington, Conn.) and freshman forward Lily Anderson (Portland, Maine) only 24 seconds apart, gave the visitors a 10-4 cushion with 24:11 left in the game.

Goals by junior midfielder Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) at 20:19 and Silverman at 18:51, pulled Springfield to within four, 10-6, but a Deegan goal (her 10th point of the night) at 15:07, followed by another Anderson tally made it 12-6 with 10:53 to play in the game.

Looney’s third goal came with 10:13 on the clock, while Silverman’s third with 5:45 remaining, rounded out the scoring.

Springfield junior forward Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) became the program’s all-time leading scorer with her only goal of the game at 4:33 in the first half. Her 165 career points (115 goals, 50 assists) moves her ahead of previous record holder Danica Ansardy who compiled 164 points from 1999 to 2002.
