Pride Travels To Utica For Empire 8 Matchup

The Series: This is the second game in the series that started last year with a 46-0 SC victory, the first of two ‘04 shutouts for the Pride defense (SC 55. Plymouth St. 0) ... graduated FB Tim Lutgens scored three TDs.

SC’s Last Game: Springfield lost at Alfred in overtime, 23-22 ... the Pride tied the game with no time left on the clock in regulation, however, the extra point was blocked ... Alfred scored first in overtime, SC matched the TD, but missed the extra point ... the loss dropped SC to 0-3 ... the last time the Pride lost four straight was in 1993, when they lost their first four.

Utica Scouting Report: The Pioneers had an off-week last Saturday after starting the season with victories over Becker (28-8) and Husson (23-6) before losing to RPI (10-41) ... UC averages 371.7 yds of offense per game and is led by Jr QB Nick Martin (45-78-4, 613 yds, .577 percent) ... Martin was 15-28, 287 yds vs. Becker ... one of his favorite targets is WR Jim Proniewych (14-16.6) ... RB Mike Capra has 39 carries for 156 yds and a pair of TDs.

SC’s Offense: Senior QB Damian Gunningsmith (Trumansburg, NY) orchestrated SC’s fourth quarter, 14-play, 80-yard drive that led to Derron Walker’s (White Plains, NY) two yard TD run that tied the game with 00:00 on the clock ... Gunningsmith will start against Utica ... soph FB Jason Williams (E. Falmouth, MA) had a career high 118 yds on 26 carries ... Sr FB Andre Clayton (Manchester, CT) rushed for 104 yds ... Clayton is expected to start against Utica.

SC’s Defense: Jr LB Andrew Madigan (New Britain, CT) had 11 tackles against Utica after recording 13 in each of the first two games ... Sr CB Mitch Dupuis (Merrimack, NH) intercepted his third pass of the season.

SC’s Special Teams: Soph Michael Mahoney (Mashpee, MA) punted the ball five times against Alfred for a 41.0 avg and now owns a 40.2 three-game avg.

Injury Report: Jr OT Dan Connors (Everett, MA) sustained an ankle injury and is doubtful for Saturday.
