NEW LONDON, Conn. - Feb. 23, 2008-Melissa Martinelli scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team to a 69-46 victory over Springfield College this afternoon in New London.
Supporting Martinelli were Corinne McCormack with 14 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Natalie Moyer with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
For Springfield, senior guard Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) led with 14 points. She turned out to be the only Springfield player to reach double figures. Next closest was senior guard Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) with 9 points. Junior center Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) added 6 points and 4 rebounds.
Coast Guard finished the regular season with an impressive overall record of 21-4, and 11-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The Bears will be seeded second in the NEWMAC post-season tourney which begins on Wednesday evening (Feb. 27). They will play #7-seeded Clark.
Springfield finished the regular season at 14-10 overall, 9-4 in league play. The Pride will be seeded third in the NEWMAC Tourney, and will open against #6-seeded Wellesley at Blake Arena on Wednesday at 7 pm.
Coast Guard led 11-10 with 11:14 left in the first half before scoring 10 straight points to take a 21-10 lead with 7:01 left. The Bears would maintain that margin and lead 35-24 at halftime.
The Bears would put the game away with an 18-3 spurt in the second half, which turned a 41-31 lead with 13:41 left into a 59-34 lead with 7:35 remaining.
Coast Guard shot 40.4 percent from the field (23-57) and 36.7 percent from 3-point range (11-30) while Springfield shot just 27.8 percent from the field (15-54) and hit 8 of 18 from 3-point range (44.4 percent).
