SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - March 5, 2008 – Preseason All-American Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) dished out a game-high five assists as the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team defeated Gordon, 10-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Stagg Field.
The win, the first for the Pride in the 2008 campaign, moves Springfield to 1-2 on the season, while Gordon falls to 0-2.
Springfield had several terrific individual performances that lifted it to victory this afternoon. Chris Jez (Somers, Conn.) was sensational at the face-off “X”, winning 12-of-20, and picking up 10 ground balls. Preseason All-American Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) tallied a pair of goals from the long-stick midfielder position to go along with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Springfield struck first, wasting no time as Greg Welch (Peabody, Mass.) found Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Maine) from behind the cage just 1:08 into the game. The Fighting Scots tied the game up just over eight minutes later when Andrew Kirkaldy found Matt Johnson behind the Springfield defense for the score. After an illegal procedure on the ensuing face-off, Gordon’s Jordan MacIntosh netted a goal 11 seconds later to give Gordon its only lead of the game. Both of the Fighting Scots goals were man-up tallies after the Pride was called for an illegal stick midway through the opening period.
Sharpe would tie the game up at two goals apiece after he intercepted an attempted clear by Gordon and fired a shot past goalkeeper Brett Becker with just under three minutes left to play. Beebe then went on to tally his first of five assists on the afternoon when he connected with Montgomery from 12 yards out to put SC up 3-2. With eight seconds remaining in the first period, Dan Utz slipped through the Pride defense and finished a Kirkaldy feed to tie the game at three.
Springfield took the lead for good 45 seconds into the second quarter when Kyle Gable (Somers, Conn.) found the back of the cage. SC extended its lead to 5-3 after Montgomery tallied his third goal of the game as he ripped a jump shot from 14 yards out halfway up with 7:29 left in the first half. Utz tallied Gordon’s lone goal of the period with 2:59 remaining to make the score 5-4 heading to the half.
The Pride put the game away at the start of the third quarter with three unanswered goals to go up 8-4. Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) notched a pair of man-up goals, while Welch added another tally to put the Pride in control. Beebe handed out assists on all three of the goals in the opening nine minutes of the third. MacIntosh connected with Kirkaldy for a pair of goals in the final 3:43 of the third quarter to make it a two-goal game.
Springfield was too much down the stretch as Gable netted his second of the game and Sharpe cleaned up a scramble in front of the cage by flicking the ball into the back of the net off the ground in the first 2:54 of the fourth. Joel Derechinsky netted the final goal of the game 5:25 into the fourth, as both teams remained scoreless in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
The Pride outshot Gordon, 48-25, and was 23-for-27 on clear attempts. Gordon was daunted by 33 turnovers in the game.
Tom Albano (Ridgewood, N.J.) finished with nine saves in goal for the Pride, while Becker made 14 stops in the cage for the Fighting Scots.
Springfield returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to take on Stevens Tech. The game will be played at Ridgewood High School. Face-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
