Ohio State Downs Men's Volleyball in Second of Two-Match Series

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 16, 2007 - The 12th-ranked Ohio State (4-0) men’s volleyball team, behind a match-high 17 points from Robbie Klein, won a 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-24) decision over Springfield College (0-3) this afternoon in St. John Arena to complete the two-match sweep of the Pride. Klein had a team-high 13 kills in the match, adding an ace serve, a solo block, and four assist blocks while hitting a season-high .706.

OSU’s John Albertson contributed 14.5 points in the contest with Dan Meske adding 13.5. Albertson recorded eight kills, two ace serves and a match-high nine assist blocks for the Buckeyes with Meske contributing nine kills, three ace serves and three assist blocks. SC junior outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Chili, N.Y.) posted a team-high 15 points for the Pride with a match-high 15 kills.

Trailing 5-4 in game one, an SC kill by Palumbo tied the game at five. A kill from sophomore middle blocker Andy Sipe (New Oxford, Pa.) and an ace serve from freshman outside hitter Andrew Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) gave the Pride a 7-5 lead. Buckeye kills from Layne Dreven and Klein tied the game at seven. SC took an 8-7 lead with a Sipe kill. A Dreven kill tied the game at eight, and with a Meske, Dreven and Sam Stevens block and a Klein ace serve, the Buckeyes took a 10-8 lead. Pride kills by Nally and Palumbo and an OSU error cut the lead to 11-10. The Buckeyes, with a 5-2 run opened a 16-12 lead. The run began with two kills from Albertson. A Klein kill and two OSU errors made it 14-12. A Dan Mathews-Albertson block and an ace serve from Stevens made it 16-12. With OSU leading 21-17, a Buckeye error cut the lead to three at 21-18. Ohio State then scored nine straight points to win the game, 30-18.

Tied at four in game two, two Buckeye errors gave SC a 6-4 lead. A kill and ace serve from Albertson tied the game at six for Ohio State. The Pride, with a Palumbo kill, regained the lead at 7-6. A four-point OSU run put the Buckeye ahead, 10-7. The run began with a Klein solo block to tie the game. A Dreven-Meske block, a Pride error and a Meske kill opened a three point lead at 10-7. At 13-11, Pride kills by junior outside hitter Javier Rosario (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Palumbo tied the game at 13. Tied at 15, two kills from Klein, a Dreven-Meske block and an SC error gave Ohio State a 19-15 lead. At 24-20, an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to three at 24-21. OSU closed out the game with a six-point run for the 30-21 victory.

SC, with two OSU errors started game three up 2-0. A kill from Stevens and a Meske ace serve tied the game at two. The squads exchanged points to 18-all. A Klein kill and a Pride error gave Ohio State a 20-18 lead. At 22-20, a Buckeye error cut the lead to one at 22-21. Three consecutive SC errors gave Ohio State a 25-21 lead. A Palumbo kill cut the lead to 25-22. The Buckeyes took the lead to six with a Meske kill, a Mathews-Albertson-Klein block, and a Klein-Albertson block to lead 28-22. A kill from junior middle blocker Dave Smietana (Buffalo, N.Y.) cut the lead to five at 28-23. A Klein kill set match point at 29-23. A Buckeye error stopped the match point at 29-24. Ohio State won the game with a kill from Mathews, 30-24, to win the match, 3-0.

Ohio State hit .413 for the match to .138 for SC. The Buckeyes had a 42-35 advantage in kills and an eight to four margin in ace serves. OSU’s Meske posted a match-high three. The Pride gave up 13 service errors to 11 for Ohio State. Defensively, OSU had a 28-18 margin in digs with Meske recording a match-high 10. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 16-to-one advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Albertson recorded a match-high nine assist blocks with Mathews adding eight. Mathews had a match-high 39 assists to 32 for junior setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) for SC.

The Pride returns home to Springfield, Mass., to host Nazareth College on Friday night, January 19th, in a 7:00 p.m. start at Blake Arena.
