Sharpe Named Pilgrim Lacrosse League Player of the Year; Pride Land Eight on All-Conference Teams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - May 5, 2008 - Springfield College senior longstick midfielder Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) has been named the Pilgrim Lacrosse League’s Player of the Year after leading Springfield to the NCAA Tournament this season as Pilgrim League Champions. In his first season at the helm of the Wheaton College Lyons, head coach Mike McCaffrey was chosen the league’s Coach of the Year, while Rookie of the Year honors went to Wheaton’s first-year attack Chris Landers (Manchester, Mass.).

On Saturday afternoon (May 3), Sharpe propelled the Pride to its seventh Pilgrim Lacrosse League Championship as Springfield topped second-seeded Wheaton College, 9-5. Sharpe fueled an impressive defensive effort in which Springfield allowed just four goals per game in the Pilgrim League Tournament as well as holding both opponents in the semifinals and championship games to one combined goal. For the year, Sharpe, a preseason All-American, has picked up 64 ground balls and caused a team-best 30 turnovers thus far.

Springfield will host Kean University on Wednesday, May 7th at 7:00 pm in the NCAA Tournament First Round.

Freshman attack Chris Landers led the Lyons in scoring this season with 39 points off 29 goals and 10 assists in his first season for Wheaton. McCaffrey led Wheaton to the Pilgrim Championship game for the first time since 1996.
