HARTFORD, Conn. – December 4, 2007 – The Springfield College men’s basketball held off a furious late rally as it went on to upset No. 21 Trinity College, 62-57, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
With the win the Pride improve to 2-3 on the season and snap a three-game skid while the Bantams lost for the first time this season, falling to 6-1. The Bantams were ranked 21st in the country in the latest D3hoops.com poll.
After a Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) transition layup off a steal from Ryan Blackmon (Stamford, Conn.) put the Pride up by seven with 2:22 left in regulation, the Bantams stormed back into the game. Trinity took advantage of Springfield turning the ball over on its next three possessions to cut the lead to two after Brian Ford drilled a three pointer to make the score 59-57 with 59 seconds left in the game.
The Pride turned the ball over on the ensuing out of bounds play however Trinity’s Patrick Hasiuk’s three ball to take the lead was off. John Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) grabbed the rebound for the Pride and was fouled. Strawson made the first of two to extend the lead to three.
On Trinity’s next possession, Gregg Daly (Farmington, Conn.) stole the ball and was also fouled. Daly had similar results at the line, making one of two, making it a two possession game. Gibbs made one more free throw at the end of the game to cap off the five-point upset.
Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) finished with the Pride’s second-straight double double as he recorded 13 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four steals. Classmate Blackmon netted a team-high 16 points, dished six assists, and added five steals. Strawson chipped in with eight points and eight boards while Gibbs finished with nine points.
The Bantams were led by Russ Martin who netted a game-high 18 points and added nine boards. Robert Taylor added 15 points and 13 rebounds while Brian Ford chipped in with 12 points.
The Pride return to action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to take on Williams on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is slated for 3:00 pm.
