No. 5 Men's Volleyball Sweeps Sacred Heart University, 3-0, in EIVA Hay Play

FAIRFIELD, Conn., February 6, 2007 - Springfield College freshman outside hitter AJ Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) had 12 kills and 13 digs, and sophomore opposite Ryan Fredrickson (Manahawkin, N.J.) led all players with 15 kills as the fifth-ranked Pride posted an impressive 3-0 win over Sacred Heart in men’s volleyball action Tuesday night at the Pitt Center. The Pride won the match by scores of 30-20, 30-17 and 30-24.

SC came out hot in the first game, posting a .429 hitting percentage. The Pride jumped out to an 8-4 lead and opened up as much as a 10 point bulge, 23-13, before closing out the victory by the same margin. The Pride had three players with six kills in the opening frame.

The Pride continued to control the play in the second game, jumping out to an 11-5 lead. The Pioneers narrowed the deficit to 11-7, but the SC attack became to much. The Pioneers trailed 18-12 before the Pride ran off nine of the next 11 points to open up a 27-13 lead en route to going up by a two-game margin.

The Pioneers started quickly in the third game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. SC, however, came back to tie it at 7-7. The teams exchanged the next series of points before the Pride ran off four straight to open up an 18-14 lead. Sacred Heart hung tough to draw within three, 20-17, but SC won 10 of the final 13 points to close out the match in three straight games.

Senior Chris Yantz led the Pioneers with 12 kills while senior Mike Ivers added seven winners. For the Pride, junior outside hitter Javier Rosario (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had 10 kills and 13 digs to complement his other two teammates. SC hit a solid .337 for the match.

The Pride improves its overall record to 7-4 on the season and 2-0 in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Hay Division action with the win.

SC will next host the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic at Blake Arena on Friday and Saturday, February 9-10, as Ball State University, the University of California, San Diego, and Rutgers-Newark will be entertained by the Pride. Matches start at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on both nights. On Friday night, Rutgers and Ball State square off at 6:00 p.m., followed by UCSD and SC in the nightcap at 8:00 p.m.
