WORCESTER, MASS. - April 2, 2008 -- The Clark University softball team allowed just one run in a pair of wins over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday at O'Brien Field. The Cougars took the opener, 3-1, and posted a 9-1 six-inning victory in the nightcap.

Clark upped its overall record to 11-5 and 3-1 in league play, while Springfield evens up at 9-9 overall (3-3 NEWMAC).

The Cougars, who collected 12 hits in the second game, scored three runs on a Pride error in the first inning. They added four more runs in the second. With the bases loaded, Melissa Traft (Milford, Mass.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to right field, Katherine Tutela (Dalton, Mass.) hit a run-producing single and Darcy Kurashige-Elliot (Berkeley, Calif.) delivered a two-run double for a 7-0 advantage.

Springfield scored its run in the third on an RBI single from Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.).

The Pride held Clark scoreless until Kurashige-Elliot ended the game with a two-run homer to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth. It was Kurashige-Elliots fifth homerun of the season.

Senior Heather Warren (Upland, Cali.) tossed a complete game three-hitter to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Kurashige-Elliot had two hits and four RBI for Clark, while Wlosek, Angela Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) and Danielle Spiro (South Windsor, Conn.) each had single hits for Springfield.

Freshman Sarah Pongratz (Winchester, Mass.) took the loss for the Pride. She gave up seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and walked two in 1.2 innings on the mound.

In the opener, Kurashige-Elliot's homerun, a solo shot to left field, gave Clark a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Springfield got a run back in the top of the fourth. Wlosek ripped a one-out double to right center giving her team a runner in scoring position. Two batters later, Laura Riccio (Bristol, Conn.), who pinch-ran for Wlosek, came home on Aimee Cassella's (Southington, Conn.) single to tie the game (1-1).

The Cougars regained the lead (2-1) in the home half of the frame on an RBI hit from Joanna Clark (Windham, Me.). Warren's fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth accounted for the final score (3-1).

Warren, Kurashige-Elliot and Clark each had a hit and an RBI to lead Clark's offense.

Traft (5-3) earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits, issuing just one walk and striking out six.

Junior Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.), who scattered six hits and fanned four, took the loss for Springfield, falling to 7-3.

Up next, Springfield will entertain Smith College in a conference twinbill on Friday (3:30 p.m.)
