Softball Captures First-Ever NEWMAC Regular-Season Championship with Saturday Sweep of MIT

SC 3, MIT 0

SC 22, MIT 0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 21, 2007 – Springfield College sophomore outfielder Danielle Spiro (South Windsor, Conn.) went 4-for-7 in two games with eight runs batted in (RBI) and five scored runs as the Pride swept MIT, 3-0 and 22-0, in each team’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season finales at Potter Field.

With this afternoon’s doubleheader sweep, SC has captured its first-ever NEWMAC regular-season title, as it will be the host school for the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament starting on Wednesday (Apr. 25). The Pride will face the winner of No. 4 Clark versus No. 5 Smith on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., and will then host the semifinal and final rounds of the six-team double elimination tournament on Saturday and Sunday, April 28th and 29th. SC’s lone NEWMAC Tournament crown came back in 2000.

In game one, a three-run homer from Spiro in the bottom half of the third inning was all the Pride would need. Junior starter Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.) tossed four complete innings, not allowing a hit in striking out five for her 11th victory of the season (11-5). First-year Courtney Kapinos (South Hadley, Mass.) then came on to pitch the final three innings for her second save of the season, allowing just three hits and no runs.

In the second game, SC pounded out 17 hits and 22 runs in the five-inning affair, highlighted by an 11-run bottom of the first. Spiro and sophomore designated player Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.) combined to go 5-for-9 at the plate with 10 RBIs and six runs scored. Junior Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.), sophomore Loni Rodriguez (Westfield, Mass.), freshman Jaimie Moran (Manchester, Conn.), and sophomore Amanda Lyons (Eastchester, N.Y.) all contributed with two RBIs in the victory. Sophomore starter Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) registered her eight win of the season (8-6) in five innings of work, allowing just four hits and no runs.

For the Engineers (1-24, 0-14 NEWMAC), junior starter Leah Bogsted pitched well in a losing effort during game one, tossing six innings in striking out an impressive 10 batters. Freshman catcher Kasey Rowe led MIT with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate in game two.

The Pride will next host Williams College on Monday afternoon, April 23rd, in a 4:00 p.m. tune-up before NEWMAC Tournament play starts on Wednesday (Apr. 25).
