Three Springfield College Grads in Sunday's Super Bowl XLI

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- January 30, 2007 -- When the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts meet in Super Bowl XLI this Sunday (February 4) in Miami, Springfield College will be there.

And, no matter what the final score is, Springfield College cannot lose.

A total of three strength and conditioning coaches -- all graduates of Springfield College -- are on the Bears and Colts. Representing the Bears will be Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Rusty Jones '76, G '86, as well as his assistant, Jim Arthur '00, G '02. Representing the Colts will be Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Jon Torine '95.

In 1976, Jones earned his bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. He later earned his master's degree in Movement Science. In '95, Turine earned his bachelor's degree in Health Fitness. Arthur received his bachelor's degree in '00 in Applied Exercise Science, and later his master's degree in Exercise Science and Sports Studies.

Both Springfield Head Football Coach Mike DeLong and SC Strength and Conditioning Coach Margaret Jones have very positive words to say about all three.

"We're thrilled to have three SC grads involved in the Super Bowl," said DeLong.

"I've known Rusty for quite awhile," said DeLong. "He is a leader in his field, and has always been 'up' on how to combine a strength and conditioning regimen with proper nutrition. He has been right on the cutting edge in terms of producing the best from his athletes for a very long time."

"I can tell you that Rusty Jones is a great guy who has really given back to this institution," said Margaret Jones. "Rusty has spoken here on campus a number of times, and has grown into a terrific leader in his profession."

"I didn't really get to know Jon (Torine) when he was here all that well," said DeLong, "but I do know that he has developed a very good reputation in the NFL within his ranks."

"I've spoken with Jon on several occasions," said Jones. "I can't tell you how proud we are of him. He's come a long way in a relatively short time."

"As far as Jim Arthur is concerned, he was a member of our football team," said DeLong. "He was a very hard-working young man in our program, and always made a good impression. His great work-ethic has really allowed him to rise to another level."

"Jim Arthur was one of the hardest-working kids I've ever seen," echoed Jones. "Clearly his work-ethic was incredible, a very driven guy. I'm not surprised in the least he is where he is today."
