SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 25, 2006 - Springfield College senior defender Christine Nicol (Farmington, Conn.) has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Co-Player of the Week in women’s lacrosse in an announcement made on Monday afternoon, April 24th. Nicol shares the award with Wheaton College midfielder Meredith Hurd.
Nicol, a graduate of Farmington High School, held Mount Holyoke College's Caitlin Taylor to no goals in the Pride's 12-5 win in South Hadley, Mass., on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 22). Nicol also recorded five caused turnovers in the victory. The senior defender held Taylor to just two assists on the afternoon, which was quite a feat, as Taylor leads the NEWMAC in goals, assists, and total points. As of last week, Nicol was ranked sixth in all of Division III in caused turnovers. Nicol currently has a total of 47 caused turnovers in the Pride's 13 games, good for a 3.62 average per game.
SC (9-4, 6-0 NEWMAC) has finished its conference regular-season with a perfect 6-0 mark, as the Pride will host this weekend’s NEWMAC Tournament. SC will host the winner of Babson College and MIT on Saturday afternoon, April 29th, in a 12:00 p.m. start at Benedum Field. The Championship Game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, April 30th, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
