Late Rally Falls Short for Men's Lacrosse, 11-10, at Bowdoin College

Boxscore

BRUNSWICK, Maine, March 25, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore midfielder Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Maine) scored a team-high three goals, but it was Bowdoin College which defeated the Pride, 11-10, this afternoon in a non-conference contest in Montgomery's hometown of Brunswick, Maine.

Bowdoin's Dave Donahue scored the game-winning goal with just three seconds remaining in regulation, lifting the Polar Bears to the 11-10 victory and a 4-1 overall record. Bowdoin led by four goals with 11 minutes to go, but a late rally by the Pride (2-3) nearly resulted in overtime before Donahue's tally before the final horn.

A back-and-forth contest in the first half saw the game tied at five at intermission, thanks to a tally by Montgomery with one tick left in the second quarter. A stellar third quarter by Bowdoin saw the hosts seemingly take control of the game, courtesy of a pair of Andy Nelson scores sandwiched around tallies by Alex Weaver, Chris Eaton and Brad Gillis.

Down 10-6 heading into the final quarter, SC responded with a run of their own. Freshman forward Phillip Barry (Randolph, Vt.) and senior midfielder Brandon Asplundh (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) found the back of the net early in the quarter to slice the lead in half. With under a minute to go, Montgomery cut to the middle and rifled a shot from 10 yards out that tucked inside the post to make it 10-9, with just 34 seconds left.

Following a face-off win, junior midfielder Jason Brown (South Hadley, Mass.) found first-year midfielder Chris Jez (Somers, Conn.) in front of the cage for a one-timer score with 17 seconds remaining, deadlocking the score.

Bryan Duggan won the ensuing face-off for Bowdoin, and Dave Donahue collected the loose ball in the Polar Bear defensive zone. Donahue sprinted downfield and cut loose a one-bounce shot that beat the Pride netminder Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) with three seconds on the clock.

Cloutier kept SC in the contest, making 19 saves for the Pride. Charlie Legg made five stops for Bowdoin in the game. Nelson led Bowdoin with three scores, while Connor Fitzgerald collected a goal and three assists. Barry had two scores and one assist for SC.
