Softball Splits at Wheaton, Winning 9-4, Then Losing a Heartbreaker, 6-5

SC 9, Wheaton 4

Wheaton 6, SC 5

NORTON, Mass. -- March 31, 2007 -- Wheaton College junior hurler Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, R.I./Chariho Regional) handed herself the victory by smacking a two-out, two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Lyons a 6-5 win during the second game of their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against Springfield College on Saturday at Clark Field. Wheaton moved to 9-9 overall and 3-1 in the league, while Springfield, which took game one by a 9-4 final, is now 8-8 and 3-1.

The teams battled through a game-one slugfest that included five home runs, but the Pride came out on top thanks to six two-out runs. Senior Jessica DePolito's (Taunton, Mass./Coyle and Cassidy) solo shot gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead in the second, but Springfield freshman Michelle Wlosek's (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) two-out RBI single in the third knotted the game. Junior Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) hit a two-run inside-the-park homer with two down the next inning for the Pride, but Lyon sophomore Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) countered with her first collegiate home run in the bottom half that cut Wheaton's deficit to 3-2.

Three more Springfield runs scampered across in the fifth, highlighted by freshman Jaimie Moran's (Manchester, Conn./Manchester)two-run homer, but junior Erika Marini (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) sent her second home run of the season over the left field fence in the bottom half to plate two and bring the Lyons within 6-4. However, Springfield scored three unearned runs with two down in the seventh to seal the win.

Freshman Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) yielded only two hits and an unearned run in the first 3.2 innings before receiving the loss, as she fanned four. Poulton allowed three unearned runs in 2.2 innings of relief. Sophomore Brady Benton (Concord, N.H./Concord) was the lone Wheaton player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Junior Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn./King & Low-Heywood Thomas) picked up the win after giving up four earned runs on seven hits during a complete-game effort. Fumicello finished 2-for-5 with three runs, three RBI and two steals, while Wlosek was 2-for-2 with two RBI and three walks.

In game two, Wheaton took a 2-0 lead into the fifth after Benton walked and stole home in the second, and DePolito doubled in a two-out run the following inning. After being held scoreless on four hits through the first four innings, Springfield broke out for five unearned runs with two down in the fifth on four hits and two errors. Sophomore Loni Rodriguez (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) knotted the game with a two-run single, and freshman Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) put the Pride on top with an RBI single back up the box.

Facing a 5-2 hole, Wheaton regrouped for two runs with two down in the fifth as DePolito blasted her second home run of the twinbill and fourth of the season beyond the fence in straightaway center field. Senior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) reached on an error to lead off the seventh and, after DePolito hit into a fielder's choice and stole second with Lachance on third, Poulton ripped a two-strike liner just over Moran's outstretched glove at shortstop to easily plate Wheaton's two senior base runners.

Poulton snagged the win thanks to two perfect innings of relief, during which she struck out two. Junior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name Central Catholic) received a no-decision after yielding no earned runs in five innings, walking zero batters and striking out four. DePolito finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Poulton and junior Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) had two hits apiece. Sophomore southpaw Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) went the distance for Springfield, giving up four earned runs in 6.2 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Sophomore Danielle Spiro (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) was 3-for-3 with a double, while Fumicello added two hits.

Springfield will next host Clark in a make-up doubleheader on Sunday at 12 noon at Potter Field.
