  • On Site With The Senior Executive of Disaster Mental Health ServicesJ. Patrick Decoteau, Professor of Rehabilitation & Disability Studies, recently joined a group of national rehabilitation counseling leaders who met with the Senior Executive of Disaster Mental Health Services, Dr. Susan Hamilton, at the national headquarters of the American Red Cross in Washington, DC. Joining Dr. Decoteau were: Dr. David Kaplan, CEO of the American Counseling Association; Dr. Carolyn Wilde, Chair of the Public Policy & Legislation Committee of the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, Patricia Nunez, President-elect of the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association. Dr. Decoteau represented the Commission on Rehabilitation Counseling Certification where he serves as Chair of the Standards & Credentials Committee. The group was invited to meet with Dr. Hamilton to discuss possible inclusion of certified rehabilitation counselors when the local Red Cross Chapters recruit professional volunteers to provide mental health services to those affected by national disasters, such as hurricane Katrina. Dr. Decoteau and the other national leaders, agreed to work with Dr. Hamilton in reviewing current mental health service training provided by the American Red Cross while working towards inclusion of specific services provided by certified rehabilitation counselors during national disasters.
