Springfield College Announces Major Facility RenovationsNovember 8, 2004
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 8, 2004 -- As part of its on-going campus facility improvement initiative, Springfield College will add two multi-purpose fields surfaced with state-of-the-art synthetic field turf.
Groundbreaking for the project is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 9. The project will be completed in June of 2005.
“We are investing in these projects as part of our continuing program of campus improvement designed to maintain excellence in our academic and athletic programs, as well as enhance student life,” said Richard B. Flynn, president of Springfield College.
“This is an important step for the college and a big plus for our students,” said Cathie Schweitzer, director of athletics at Springfield College. “There will be a significant increase in opportunities for our recreational and intramural programs, and for our intercollegiate and club sports.”
The grass-covered men’s and women’s soccer game field will be completely renovated and resurfaced, and a second field will be installed next to it, adjacent to the college’s softball complex. The two fields will encompass over 200,000-square feet. Lights and bleachers will also be erected as part of the project.
Synthetic field turf has several advantages over grass and Astroturf including year-round usage even in inclement weather, improved safety, and less maintenance.
Clark Companies of Delhi, N.Y., will handle the site preparation. “Clark Companies is a leader in the field of site preparation in the Northeast. They have handled a significant number of these projects, including the new facility at Western New England College,” said John Mailhot, vice president administration and finance said.
Recently, Springfield College has completed several large campus improvements including major renovations of Cheney Hall, Wilbraham Hall, the Brennan Center, and the Office of Admissions; construction of a residence hall; and completion of several other facilities and grounds projects.
