Ugandan Coaches Visit Springfield College

January 18, 2012

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 12, 2012 -- Four basketball coaches from Uganda, Timothy Ayeet Odeke, Carol Nyafwono, Immaculate "Chocho" Nalwadda, and Nicholas Twesigye, visited the Springfield College campus Wednesday, Jan. 18, as part of an educational trip to learn about and observe youth, college, and professional basketball trainings and competitions in the U.S., as well as to share their experiences playing and coaching basketball in Uganda. The trip, part of the International Sport Connection Basketball Coach Training/Cultural Exchange program, is led by Jens Omli ‘04, assistant professor at Texas Tech University, and Springfield College Athletic Counseling alumnus.

The coaches all currently live in Kampala, Uganda, but represent three of the four regions in Uganda (Western, Central, and Eastern). Their trip is made possible by the SportsUnited Division of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Established in 2002, SportsUnited provides funding for programs that use sport to reach out to youth around the world and build mutual understandings between people of the United States and friends around the world. While in Springfield, Mass., the coaches will be touring Springfield College, interacting with the College faculty and students, visiting the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, visiting the site of the Birthplace of Basketball, and engaging in other cultural activities.
