Springfield College Professor Named Art Educator Of The YearMay 21, 2003
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 21, 2003 Simone Alter-Muri, Springfield College associate professor of art, has been named Massachusetts Higher Education Art Educator of the Year – 2003 by the Massachusetts Higher Education Art Association. The award was presented at the association’s Spring Conference on May 16, 2003, at the Worcester Art Museum.
Alter-Muri is the director of Springfield College undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate art therapy programs. Springfield College is the only higher education institution in Western Massachusetts offering degree programs in art therapy. Students prepare for careers in art as psychotherapy or as art therapy educators.
Certified as an art therapist by the Art Therapy Credentials Board, Alter-Muri also has a private practice in Northampton. She is a licensed clinical mental health counselor, certified head teacher, and registered art therapist. She is a graduate in psychology and art of the University of Massachusetts where she also earned her doctoral degree in early childhood development and creative behavior. She holds a master’s degree in expressive art therapy from Lesley College.
Alter-Muri is also an artist whose works in mixed media have been exhibited at numerous galleries in the United States and Switzerland. She has lectured extensively in the United States and Europe and has published numerous articles in professional journals in her field. She is also the membership chair of the American Art Therapy Association.
