Governor Recognizes Springfield College as Exemplary Employer of People with Disabilities

December 6, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 6, 2007 – Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick presented Springfield College with an Exemplary Employer Award of the Governor’s Commission on Employment of People with Disabilities at ceremonies at the State House in Boston on Oct. 9. The college was one of 12 employers honored for demonstrating best practices in hiring and retaining workers with disabilities.

“Hiring workers with a disability adds not only to the bottom line, but to our ultimate goal of expanding employment opportunities for people in every corner of the Commonwealth,” Patrick said. “I commend these employers for their efforts and urge others to follow their example.”

According to Springfield College Director of Community Relations Brendan C. Neal, who accepted the honor at the 19th annual awards ceremony, “On behalf of our faculty, staff, students and alumni, it was a great pleasure to receive this recognition. Springfield College is proud to have people with disabilities on its team, and places a high value on providing our employees with the support that they need to succeed.”

Springfield College was honored for its commitment to hiring people with disabilities and as a leader in educating rehabilitation and disabilities counselors in the Northeast. It also has partnered with its food service, Aramark, to hire people with disabilities.

Nominating employers for the annual award are state agencies who work with people with disabilities and vendors who provide employment services to people with disabilities. A subcommittee of the Governor’s Commission on Employment of People with Disabilities chooses the award recipients, who are reviewed by the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.
