Springfield College School of Social Work Open House

February 20, 2009

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 20, 2009 -- The Springfield College School of Social Work will hold an open house for prospective graduate students on Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 4 to 6 p.m., at its facilities at the Brennan Center, 45 Island Pond Road, Springfield.

Springfield College offers the only master of social work weekend program in western Massachusetts. Students can complete the weekend program in three years, or the weekday program in two years with classes twice per week. The combined master of social work/juris doctorate is a four-year program in conjunction with Western New England College School of Law. Springfield College also offers an advanced standing master of social work program for qualified graduates of bachelor of social work programs that are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of social workers will grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016. A master’s degree has become the standard for many positions.

According to Francine J. Vecchiolla, dean of the Springfield College School of Social Work, “The current economic, political, and social climate requires preparing professional social workers for direct clinical practice, program development, administration, grant writing, consultation, human rights and social justice activism, and research. Our advanced generalist practice orientation, which examines causes and symptoms of individual and social malaises, informs students of best practice approaches with clients, organizations, and local and global communities in general.”

At the open house, prospective graduate students will have opportunities to meet faculty members and current students, learn about admissions and financial aid, and tour the school’s facilities. Refreshments will be served. Advance registration is available by calling the admissions coordinator, at (413) 748-3060.

The Springfield College School of Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the official accrediting body for social work programs in the United States. Graduates are eligible for professional social work licensure in all 50 states. The MSW/JD program is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. Graduates are eligible for professional social work licensure and bar examination.
