Richard B. Flynn Campus Union Honored for Design Excellence

February 18, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 17, 2011 -- The Richard B. Flynn Campus Union at Springfield College has been cited for design excellence in the 2010 Architectural Portfolio of American School & University (AS&U) magazine. The building, which opened in January 2010, was chosen in the annual competition that spotlights some of the most effective learning environments in America.

Nominating the new building was its architect, Symmes Maini & McKee Associates of Cambridge, Mass. A jury of members of the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country. One hundred fifty-one projects were chosen for publication in AS&U, a monthly educational facilities, purchasing and business administration magazine reaching 70,000 facility planners, architects and school and university administrators. This is the 28th year of the competition.

The selection criteria were function, frugality, features, inspiring learning, flexibility and balance. The jury also considered sustainability, maintainability, agility in planning, attaining “the vision,” and community use and integration.

The Richard B. Flynn Campus Union includes space for student organizations and activities, international programs, career services, volunteer programs, residence life, and the administrative staff of the student affairs division. It features a food court with a two-story atrium, sports bistro with large flat-screen televisions, and the spiritual life center with a meditation room. Other spaces include a large sub-dividable multi-purpose room with LCD projectors, bookstore, convenience store, post office, several conference rooms and lounges, and activity space.

The main entrance of the 58,500-square-foot building features a rotunda illuminated with computer-controlled colored lighting and topped by an electronic carillon programmed to play 500 songs and sounds. All entrances are equipped with large flat-screen televisions displaying daily schedules of campus events and announcements. Landscaping includes an adjacent multilevel terrace with lake views.

More information about the Architectural Portfolio, including a list of 2010 projects selected for publication, is available on the AS&U website. AS&U, founded in 1928, is devoted exclusively to education facilities/business administration. Widely considered the authority for information about the educational facilities market, AS&U delivers exclusive reports, special focuses and how-to articles each month.
