Springfield College Educator Licensure and Preparation Programs Earn Renewed State Approval

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 2, 2011 -- Springfield College educator licensure and preparation programs have received renewed approval from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) through December 2016, the maximum allowable period.

In a letter to Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, Mitchell D. Chester, Massachusetts commissioner of elementary and secondary education, congratulated the college on the achievement and also for its “commitment to providing highly effective preparation programs for educators that ultimately benefit the students in the Commonwealth.”

The approval is based on the report of an ESE team, which visited the campus and reviewed the college’s in-depth self study and supporting evidence and documentation. The team also interviewed faculty and staff members, students, alumni, supervising practitioners and program supervisors. According to Linda Davis-Delano, director of the Springfield College educator preparation and licensure program, “The report is favorable with no findings to which we are required to respond, many commendations, and some professional suggestions.”

Chester also thanked the college for working with ESE over two years to collaboratively develop a new standards-based program approval process. The new process addresses critical effectiveness indicators and continuous improvement based on outcomes and data. Springfield College was one of 12 organizations in the pilot cohort.

Additionally, the ESE designated the folio that Springfield College presented as a model for the Program Approval Cohort 2 institutions. The ESE report cited the folio as a model of a well-designed and clearly organized self study that meticulously portrayed background information, evidence, analysis and action plans that address the four effectiveness indicators. Springfield College also provided evidence for optional pilot standards. “The well developed systems, documentation, and ongoing administrative oversight evident at Springfield College are exemplary,” the report stated.

Springfield College teacher licensure baccalaureate programs are in the subjects of biology for grades 5-8 and 8-12, early childhood teacher of students with and without disabilities preK-2, elementary teacher 1-6, English 5-8 and 8-12, health/family and consumer sciences all grades, history 5-8 and 8-12, mathematics 5-8 and 8-12, physical education preK–8 and 5-12, teacher of students with moderate disabilities preK – 8, and visual arts preK-8 and 5-12.

Teacher licensure post-baccalaureate programs are in the subjects of biology 8-12, early childhood teacher of students with and without disabilities preK-2, chemistry 8-12, earth science 8-12, elementary teacher 1-6, English 8-12, health/family & consumer science all grades, history 8-12, mathematics 8-12, physical education preK-8 and 5-12, political science/political philosophy 8-12, teacher of students with moderate disabilities preK-8 and 5-12, and visual arts preK-8 and 5-12.

Springfield College professional support personnel license programs are at the post-baccalaureate level in the subjects of school guidance counselor preK-8 and 5-12, and school social worker/school adjustment counselor for all grades.
