The basketball court within Blake Arena has been formally named James Naismith Court, in honor of Springfield College Professor
James Naismith, who invented the game of basketball while teaching at the College in 1891. The newly named and refinished court includes James Naismith’s name proudly displayed. The maple wood flooring allows for a variety of athletic contests, classes, lectures, and shows, and roll-out bleachers accommodate more than 2,000 spectators.

About Springfield College
Springfield College is a great place to live, learn, work, play—a place where each student can discover his or her true self. At the foundation of the Springfield College educational experience is Humanics—the age-old Greek ideal of the balanced individual—which promotes the interconnection of a person’s emotional, intellectual, and physical lives. Educating students in spirit, mind, and body is not just our mission: it’s in everything we do. This includes our facilities, which provide a different type of foundation for our programs, one that affords our students with the best resources possible to help them achieve their goals.
